When the schools closed in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Digital for Youth launched a call to collect out-of-use but still functioning company laptops to deliver to vulnerable students who do not have access to ICT material at home.
These students could be faced with learning disadvantages because they would not be able to follow the online courses that the schools organised to overcome the fact that physical learning was no longer possible.
In the months of March, April and May, Digital for Youth – an initiative set up by Close the Gap
and DNS Belgium
, collected 15000 laptops. These laptops were picked up by CTG Circular to be refurbished in our warehouse in Mechelen. Most of the collected computers were in such good state that we were able to re-deploy the large majority.
Of course, all these laptops were processed according to our usual and high standards: thorough data wipe, repairs where needed, installation of software and COVID-19 proof cleaning of the devices. In the spring, the collected and refurbished laptops were distributed among students in the Flemish and German speaking parts of Belgium.
In the summer, a second call for laptops is launched by Digital for Youth to collect 5000 laptops for students in the French speaking part of Belgium by the beginning of the new school year (September). As before, CTG Circular will refurbish all the donated laptops and distribute them to the schools. This way, vulnerable children and youngsters who do not have a laptop at home will not be left out when the new academic year starts and some classes will still be organised online.
